When you were starting your clear aligner treatment, your first question might’ve been, “Does Invisalign hurt?” While you may already know the answer, you likely felt a bit sore every time you switched to a new set of trays. However, if you had attachments or buttons placed on your teeth, then you may wonder if it’ll be painful to have them removed. Here’s how it may be nothing to worry about.

Why Did I Need Invisalign Attachments?

As a quick reminder, Invisalign attachments are the tooth-colored bumps your dentist placed on certain teeth. They are designed to help your clear aligners get a better grip on your teeth and apply specific pressure to do precise movements. While many patients need them, there are a few who might not need as many or who have opted out of getting them.

Will It Hurt to Have Them Removed?

In order to have your Invisalign buttons removed, your dentist will need to use a drill to gently take them off. While you may be worried about this process, it’s usually painless. Your provider isn’t going into your tooth with the instrument, so you may just feel the vibration of it. Oftentimes, anesthesia isn’t even needed! That being said, if your smile is more sensitive, then you may have mild discomfort. It should go away soon after you’re done.

What Should I Expect After Having the Attachments Removed?

Once your attachments are taken off, you may notice your teeth feel rougher than before. Your dentist will then polish them, but this doesn’t damage your enamel. It just gives you back a smooth smile that you’re confident in.

After all is said and done, the oddest part of the visit may be not having those small bumps! They were your norm while undergoing Invisalign, but you can feel your best knowing you’re all done. Some people may have mild sensitivity, but it should go away in a day or so.

Before you leave your provider’s office, you’ll likely be fitted and given a retainer. They will let you know when and how long to wear it, but it’s important you follow their instructions. Doing so will help preserve your results and protect the investment you made! Make it into a habit like with Invisalign; that way, you can show off your straighter smile and enjoy your comfortable bite for years to come.
